The Houston Gamblers saw a good amount of turnover this offseason in both players and coaches. With the addition of new Head Coach Curtis Johnson, there was a thought that the coaching staff may yet again have turnover, but he kept who was already there and added 3 new faces with his own personal choices!
Garret Chachere / RB Coach
Coach Chachere is an experienced coach who has coached most positions on the field both offensive and defensive. Being a New Orleans native and being an alumni and past coach at Tulane, it is no surprise that he has ties to Curtis Johnson. Chachere has over 7 years of experience at coaching the running back position, and an impressive list of players he has developed including all-pro RB Marshawn Lynch.
Kwahn Drake / DL Coach
Kwahn Drake is a young and upcoming defensive line coach. Coaching at Eastern Illinois and Tulane, he has been a coach under head coach Curtis Johnson before. The most interesting fact about this signing is that Coach Drake was the defensive line coach for the Michigan Panthers in season 1 of the USFL, and is moving to the Southern division upon departure of Jeff Fisher and the arrival of old friend Johnson.
The Michigan Panthers had many struggles in season 1, but their most successful position was arguably the defensive line. Drake was the most impressive young coach on the Panthers staff in season 1, and is now bringing his talents to Memphis.
Zach Shagi / DEF QC
Zach Shagi is a young coach brought in by Coach Johnson to handle the defensive quality control and to assist in coaching defensive backs with DB coach Brett Maxie. Shagi is an alum of Hofsta University who has been grinding and working his way up the coaching ranks since 2007. Working through High School jobs to college, he eventually worked his way to the professional level with the XFL 2.0. Once hitting the professional level he kick started his own company Fit Body Boot Camp LLC. His newest opportunity is the USFL, and it looks bright for him.
