Allstars of the Philly Stars: WR Samuel Akem

Still on the hunt for talent, The Philadelphia Stars recently signed WR Samuel Akem for the 2023 season. Let’s begin this article by paying homage to an amazing athlete and to the incredible career he’s founded.

Right out of the gate, Samuel Akem established his hunger for sportsmanship by being a two-sport athlete at Broken Arrow Highschool in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He ambitiously joining both the football and track and field teams. After honing his athletic abilities in HS, Akem joined the University of Montana Grizzlies as a redshirt freshman in 2016. He would finally get his first start in his 2017 season where he played in all 11 games, seized 18 receptions for 207 yards with 2 touchdowns.

Staying hungry, Samuel Akem really started making a name for himself during his 2018 season. He far exceeded his previous season’s 18 receptions, with a whopping 59 recorded receptions, 879 yards and completed 13 touchdowns. Remaining consistent into his 2019 season, Akem completed 59 receptions for 848 yards and 5 touchdowns. He more than likely would have beat his previous season stats. Unfortunately, Sammy Akem would suffer a collarbone break, ending his 2019 season during the 10th game. In another unfortunate stroke of fate, the pandemic would limit his return in the 2020 season. However, in the 2021 season Akem would come back with a vengeance completing 49 receptions for 689 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Graduating in 2021 with a degree in Psychology, Samuel Akem would see an end to an amazing career in college football. All in all, He has recorded 191 receptions, a staggering 2711 yards and 29 touchdowns. And the Cherry on top? Akem was the only wide receiver in Montana Grizzly program history to finish among the top 5 in all three receiving categories (i.e., career pass receptions, total receiving yards and total touchdown catches).

Now, let’s get into how this absolute unit of a wide receiver fits into the Philadelphia Stars offensive line-up. Assuming Case Cookus returns for the 2023 season, he’s going to have another amazing weapon down field. As a primarily passing team, the Stars need a powerhouse who has proven time and time again his consistency in racking up yardage, making phenomenal catches, mitigating errors and remaining committed to outperforming himself and his opponents. Looking to fill the hole Bug Howard left behind with his move into the NFL, and as a compliment to Jordan Suell, Chris Rowland, and Diondre Overton. Samuel Akem is certainly a welcomed addition to the Philadelphia Stars Line up.

The 2023 season of the USFL is certainly shaping up to be insane. New talent, returning favorites, here at the Fan Media Network we couldn’t be more excited. Additionally, I look forward to seeing how the Philly Stars continue to grow, and I wish Samuel Akem the best in his rise to stardom in professional football.

What do you think about the Stars newest offensive weapon? Let me know in the official USFL Discord!
